What Is Agent-Based MFT Architecture?

Agent-based MFT architecture uses lightweight execution agents to run file transfers, processes and workflow orchestration locally. In Automate MFT software, agents are responsible for running tasks, while the cloud-based management layer provides centralized configuration, governance, monitoring and control.

This model lets organizations execute workflows in the cloud with Progress-hosted agents, on their own infrastructure with self-hosted agents or through a combination of both. That means teams can support cloud-to-cloud automation, private endpoint access, hybrid workflows and distributed operations without redesigning their MFT architecture each time the business adds a new system, partner or location. It also means your files do not pass through the Automate MFT cloud management console.

Execute Tasks with the Right Agent Type

Automate MFT software supports two agent types:

Progress-hosted Agents

These agents are deployed and managed by the Automate MFT SaaS service. They are designed for tasks involving publicly accessible endpoints. The service automatically provisions the agent, executes the task and cleans up the agent and temporary data afterward.

Use Progress-hosted agents when all endpoints are publicly accessible and the team prefers a fully cloud-managed, low-touch execution option.

Self-hosted Agents

These agents are lightweight executables installed on modern Windows or Linux servers. They can support transfers between local and public endpoints and are ideal when workflows need access to private systems, local directories, internal network shares or endpoints behind the firewall.

Use self-hosted agents when workflows need to reach private systems, on-premises applications, internal file shares, mainframe-adjacent systems, restricted networks or data that should remain within a specific environment.

Monitor Activity from One Place

Automate MFT software supports task run and file activity reports so users can track workflow status, execution timing, transferred files and source and destination paths. Audit log reports provide a record of system activities, task runs and user actions for troubleshooting and analysis.

Agent-based execution helps teams respect network boundaries while maintaining centralized governance. Instead of routing every file through a single hub, Automate MFT software enables execution closer to the systems involved in the workflow. This helps reduce unnecessary data movement across network boundaries and supports sensitive environments where data should remain within a specific network or region.

Automate MFT software also supports enterprise access controls such as tenant-level SSO and folder-based role-based access control. Permissions can be assigned at the folder level, inherited by subfolders and applied to tasks within those folders. For SSO-enabled tenants, Automate MFT software can map identity provider groups to roles, helping align MFT administration with enterprise identity governance.

Easier deployment and lower operational overhead

Self-hosted agents are designed for straightforward deployment. Administrators create an agent in the Automate MFT console and then download the agent executable in seconds. Agents can be configured to auto-update when a new version is available, auto-update on a scheduled day and time or update manually. Progress-hosted agents require no separate setup. When assigning a task to an agent, the Progress-hosted option is automatically available for eligible workflows.

The result is a flexible architecture designed to help reduce the burden of managing traditional MFT infrastructure while giving IT teams control over where execution occurs.

Lower infrastructure costs without sacrificing local execution

Traditional MFT architectures can become expensive when organizations need to support multiple private locations, plants, data centers, branches or segmented networks. Agent pools allow teams to group multiple self-hosted agents together. Instead of assigning a task to a specific agent, users can assign it to a pool and Automate MFT automatically selects an available agent. Agent pools help distribute workloads more evenly and allow task execution to continue if an individual agent becomes unresponsive or loses connectivity.

This makes it easier to support higher-volume file workflows, distributed sites, maintenance windows and resilience requirements without hard-coding tasks to individual servers.
